a curious looking object

  • 1 curious

    curious ['kjʊərɪəs]
    (a) (inquisitive) curieux;
    I'm curious to see/know je suis curieux de voir/savoir;
    I'm curious as to what happened next je serais curieux de savoir ce qui s'est passé après
    (b) (strange) curieux, singulier;
    the curious thing (about it) is… ce qui est curieux là-dedans ou dans tout ça, c'est…;
    a curious looking object un objet bizarre
    Curiouser and curiouser Cette expression trouve son origine dans Alice in Wonderland ("Alice au pays des merveilles") de Lewis Carroll (1865), lorsqu'Alice prend conscience de l'étrangeté du pays où elle a échoué. On utilise cette expression ("de plus en plus étrange") pour exprimer sa surprise ou sa perplexité, parfois de façon ironique comme dans l'exemple suivant: hmmm, curiouser and curiouser, first she goes away for the weekend unexpectedly, then she gets a new hairstyle, then she keeps mentioning her "friend" Lawrence ("tiens, c'est de plus en plus étrange, d'abord elle part en week-end sans prévenir, ensuite elle change de coiffure, et en plus elle n'arrête pas de parler de son 'ami' Lawrence"). C'est sans doute parce que cette formule est grammaticalement incorrecte qu'elle a marqué les esprits (la forme correcte serait en effet more and more curious).
